The Austrian Cultural Forum is located in the premises of the Austrian Embassy. The Cultural Forum Tokyo sees itself as a cooperation partner and point of contact for Austrian and Japanese artists, cultural institutions and scientists in terms of initiating, planning and implementing Austrian-Japanese cultural and scientific projects.
Bilateral relationships between Austria and Japan carry a long tradition. Austria is well known in Japan for being an historical centre of music culture. Composers of classical music such as Mozart, Schubert and Mahler are world famous and their music is much appreciated in Japan. Austria’s excellent musicians and orchestras often act as so called musical ambassadors around the world and spread the fame of the aforementioned composers.
The Austrian Cultural Forum Tokyo set itself the mission, to spread knowledge of Austrian Culture beyond the world of classical music. We want the Japanese public to get to know and to experience Austria as a creative, innovative and modern country with a diverse cultural landscape.
Austria is a member of the European Union and therefore considers it important to make Austria’s location in Europe understandable and perceptible by cultural means. European integration is also a cultural task at its core. Therefore the Austrian Cultural Forum is part of the Tokyo Cluster of the network of national Cultural Institutions of member states of the European Union (EUNIC – European Union National Institutes of Culture).
